You might be thinking “Why do I get an email from Jon every week?”. And I sometimes wonder “why am I writing them?”!!

So why do I send an email every Thursday at 10:30am on the dot? I’ve been doing it now for 11 years, and I do it for a few reasons.

  1. I genuinely hope it can be useful for you. I’m under no illusions that anyone reads every single one, or that every single weekly email is of use to you. But, there will hopefully be a few tips that are just right for you – they might be about accounts, they might be about tax, or they might be about business. Or perhaps some useful apps or software you can use. But, somewhere in there, there are some nuggets that are of use to everyone.
  2. It’s about relationships and about keeping in touch. Sending this every week means I’m dropping into your inbox, come rain or come shine. For clients, it means that they keep up to date with stuff that’s going on, either in the firm or in the wonderful world of accounts and tax. And, for prospects or contacts I meet out and about, it just keeps me in their minds if they are thinking about an accountant for themselves, or for someone they know.
  3. I actually do get clients from it! Sometimes it’s somebody I did a quote for a couple of years ago but wasn’t quite ready at that time – in the past few months, a couple of people have replied to this email to say “I’m ready now”. When they wanted a change, who did they think of? The person who drops into their inbox at 10:30 every Thursday.

And why am I telling you this? Because it could work for you too!

If you have customers, clients and prospects, it’s a good way to stay at the front of their thoughts, and do so by sharing useful information on a regular basis.

It doesn’t have to be every week – it might be monthly.

It doesn’t have to be hard. I dictate these newsletters into my phone, often while out walking, so I don’t even have to type them. I then tidy them up when I get back. [BTW – I’m currently using Epiphany as my favourite AI dictation app but Apple and/or Word’s in-built dictation apps are also great.]

I prepare them in advance. I’m sure you’re not really under the illusion I sit with my finger hovering over “send” at 10:30 every Thursday. So I can prepare two or three in advance ready to go. And, I’ll admit I do even repeat the odd one!

It is worth noting that it is a slow burn. It’s not something you send out on day one and you get loads of customers rushing to you. But, by building that relationship and sharing useful hints and tips, people remember you, people get in touch, and some of those people become your clients.

So, there you go – that’s why I do this weekly email. I did take a little break last year but realised it was a mistake so I haven’t missed a week in 2025.

I do hope you do enjoy it, and you find it useful. And I do hope you today’s one makes you think, “You know what, I’ll give that a go myself.”

See you next week at 10.30am!

Cheers
Jon
