There is a certain type of business owner who reaches the end of the tax year and says, “Right – once we get past 5 April, we’ll get organised.”

Which is a bit like saying, “Once Christmas is out of the way, I’ll start the diet.”

Lovely idea. Rarely a huge success.

That is exactly why I ran last week’s live web event: Tax Year Reset – How to Minimise your Tax in 2026/27

Because the best time to improve your tax position is not when you are in a flap, digging through receipts, wondering whether that thing you bought in November was definitely for the business.

The session was really about how to make the new tax year calmer, cleaner, and more deliberate. I covered:

  • why the old salary v dividend debate is not the whole answer anymore
  • why pensions are boring… but brilliant
  • how benefits and expenses can get messy quickly
  • and why bigger decisions like cars, equipment and family planning need thinking about before the fact, not after it

And that is probably the key message.

The best tax outcomes don’t come from last-minute cleverness.

They come from:

  • cleaner habits
  • earlier conversations
  • better records

…and a proper plan

Which is not as exciting as a magic tax wand… but is far more reliable.

If you missed the live session or want to watch it back, here’s the replay:

And if it leaves you thinking, “Yes, we probably should get a grip of this properly this year”, then the next step is a Tax Diagnostic.

That gives you a second pair of eyes on your position and helps you spot opportunities, risks, and the things that need sorting sooner rather than later.

If that sounds of use, let me know.

The new tax year is a chance to reset.

The trick is actually taking it.

Cheers
Jon
