A couple of weeks ago, HMRC, in partnership with Romanian authorities, arrested 13 people linked to a phishing scam targeting PAYE, VAT, and child‑benefit systems.

They stole the identities of over 1,000 UK taxpayers and submitted fraudulent claims for rebates totalling around £47 million.

Why does it matter to you?
If scammers impersonate your business or submit false claims under your name, it can wreak havoc on your finances and reputation.

HMRC has contacted 100,000 taxpayers who might be affected and is now proactively locking compromised accounts but you must take steps to protect yourself.

How do I protect myself?

  1. Enable 2‑factor authentication (2FA) on your HMRC/Government Gateway online account.
  2. Monitor communications carefully – HMRC will never, never, never ask for passwords by email or SMS. They will also never ask you to click any link to claim a tax refund.
  3. Be just as careful on the phone – we’ve had a few clients who have had phone calls from “HMRC” saying they owe tax and asking for payment. HMRC will never ring you out of the blue to discuss your taxes. They also don’t:
  • ask for your personal details
  • use threatening language
  • ask for immediate payment on the phone
  1. Check your account history monthly for unfamiliar filings or addresses.
  2. Set up alerts with your bank in case of unusual HMRC-related payments.
  3. Document evidence immediately if you suspect fraud and then report to HMRC via their phishing service.

HMRC have some good examples of what to look out for here. And that’s not a dodgy link…honest!
