Two years ago this week, I was at the kickoff for my mastermind group for the year, and we were handed a little gift. It was a coin that said on it: Memento Mori.

If you’re lucky enough to be married to a woman with a Classics degree (!), you’ll immediately know that this is a Latin phrase broadly meaning “remember you must die”.

Not exactly “Happy New Year”, but the idea was to remind us that we do have a finite amount of time. We should make the most of it – both in work and outside.

The following day, this really hit home when I had a phone call that nobody wants to receive. My dad had been rushed to hospital, and the call basically was to say “if you’d like to say goodbye, you need to come right now”.

And I thought again of that coin last week as I was reading the eulogy at my mother-in-law’s funeral. Again, a reminder that we’re all mortal.

Now, this isn’t the most cheery blog, is it?

But the point I’m making is that it’s the start of a new year, and we should all make sure that we make the most of the time we have.

And making the most of the time we have in our personal lives means making sure that we have the best possible year in our businesses.

We don’t hold back. We don’t hesitate. We plan and we implement.

I just thought it’d be useful to share this and to say that, if you have any plans you’re looking to implement, or any big goals for the year, please feel free to share them with me and I’ll happily check in with you a year from now to see how you got on.

If you want a bit of structure for delivering your goals this year, you may also find it useful to check out the webinar I ran last week on maximising 2026. Here’s the link.

So, have a great 2026.

And, to quote the last slide of an event I’ve been at for the last couple of days, remember that Every Day Matters.

Cheers
Jon
