Lessons and Inspiration from the National Entrepreneurs Convention 2024

Last week, I had the privilege of attending the National Entrepreneurs Convention in Birmingham, now in its sixth year. This event has become a staple in my calendar, and for good reason. Every time I attend, I come away with invaluable lessons and strategies that I can implement directly into my business to drive growth. If you’re serious about scaling your business, this is one event not to miss.

One of the highlights of the convention is the array of celebrity speakers. This year, we heard from some incredibly inspiring individuals.

Charlie Mullins of Pimlico Plumbers spoke about the importance of maintaining high standards of service, which ultimately led to the growth and eventual sale of his business for £150 million just a couple of years ago. His insights into scaling through service excellence really struck a chord with me.

Richard Osman was another standout speaker. While many of us know him from his television career and bestselling books, what I didn’t realise was his key role in building Endemol, the production company behind global hits like *Big Brother* and *Deal or No Deal*, which was sold for an astounding £3 billion. One of the takeaways from Richard’s talk was the idea of not just monetising your business but “funetising” it – enjoying what you do while you build and scale.

Another powerful story came from Darren Edwards, an adventurer who faced life-altering adversity when a mountaineering accident left him paralysed. Despite this, he has achieved remarkable feats, including kayaking from Land’s End to John O’Groats and completing seven marathons on seven continents in seven days. His message was clear: setting a goal and striving to be the person you want to become is key, no matter the challenges you face.

We also heard from Darren Hughes and Jake Humpheys, the duo behind the *High Performance Podcast*. Their session was packed with insights from their many high-profile guests, ranging from Gordon Ramsay to Will.i.am, as well as business leaders and top figures in sport. The common thread across these interviews? The relentless pursuit of high performance and the habits that drive it.

While the celebrity speakers are always a draw, some of the most practical lessons I take away each year come from the sessions led by the Entrepreneurs Circle team, who organise the event. This year was no different. Sessions on optimising Google and Facebook ads, maximising the impact of your newsletter, and developing a client charter to clarify the services you offer were all incredibly useful.

The theme this year was Persistence, spearheaded by Nigel Botterill, the founder of the Entrepreneurs Circle. Nigel shared numerous examples of how persistence is a critical trait for entrepreneurs, drawing particular inspiration from the story of Ray Kroc, who transformed McDonald’s from a small burger operation into the global giant it is today. Nigel shared the scene from the film, The Founder, where Kroc (played by Michael Keaton) shares the secret to his success – “one word: persistence”.

I’ll be diving deeper into specific lessons and actionable insights in future blogs, so keep an eye out for those. In the meantime, I highly recommend getting your ticket for next year’s convention. Tickets are already on sale, and I secured mine at the event. In fact, 80% were sold on the day, so it must have been good!
