Home Responsibilities Protection: Do You Have Missing Years?
To receive the full state pension, you need to have enough qualifying years. For those reaching state pension age on or after 6 April 2016, 35 qualifying years are required to receive the full amount. If you have between 10 and 34 qualifying years, you’ll get a reduced state pension. But did you know that you could be missing some qualifying years due to an error?
What Counts as a Qualifying Year?
You secure a qualifying year by paying National Insurance contributions or receiving National Insurance credits. These credits are given in various circumstances, such as if you claim child benefit while raising children.
Between 1978 and 2010, a scheme called Home Responsibilities Protection (HRP) was in place to reduce the number of qualifying years needed for people with caring responsibilities. From 2010, HRP was replaced by National Insurance credits.
What’s the Issue?
A review by the Department for Work and Pensions revealed that some HRP entitlements weren’t recorded correctly. The main issue affects those who claimed child benefit before May 2000. At that time, it wasn’t mandatory to provide a National Insurance number when claiming, which means that some people may have missed out on having their HRP recorded properly. This could result in a lower state pension than they’re entitled to.
Have You Been Affected?
Since last autumn, HMRC has been sending letters to people who might have been impacted. But if you haven’t received a letter and think you might have missing years, don’t wait—check your eligibility online.
You can visit the Gov.uk website at www.gov.uk/home-responsibilities-protection-hrp to check your National Insurance record and claim any missing years.
Why This Matters
If your missing years are reinstated, it could increase your state pension. And if you’re already drawing your pension, you could receive backdated payments for the arrears owed to you. Keep in mind, though, that these arrears are taxable, so you may have some additional tax to pay.
Take Action Today
Ensuring your National Insurance record is accurate could make a big difference to your retirement income. If you think you might have been affected or are unsure, don’t delay—check your record and claim any missing years.
