Many small business owners go out of their way to stay under the VAT threshold—currently £90,000 in turnover—to avoid the extra admin and perceived cost of charging VAT.
But while compulsory VAT registration kicks in once you pass that threshold, there’s also the option to register voluntarily before you reach it—and for some businesses, that can actually be a smart move.
So, is voluntary VAT registration worth it? Here’s what you need to know.
The Case for Voluntary VAT Registration
Voluntary VAT registration can offer a range of benefits—financial, practical and even reputational.
- Claim Back VAT on Pre-Registration Expenses
One of the biggest incentives for registering voluntarily is the chance to reclaim VAT on goods and services you’ve already paid for.
- Goods: You can claim VAT on stock, equipment and assets purchased within four years before registration—if they’re still in use and linked to taxable supplies.
- Services: You can reclaim VAT on services purchased within six months of registration—if they were used to start or establish your business.
You’ll need valid VAT invoices and records, and your business must have been trading during that time. For many start-ups, this can mean a welcome cash injection right when you need it most.
- Improve Your Cash Flow
If you’re buying from VAT-registered suppliers, you’ll now be able to reclaim input VAT, meaning you can reduce your outgoings and keep more cash in the business. For companies with high upfront costs, this can be a game changer.
- Enhance Your Business Credibility
Being VAT-registered can create a more professional image, especially when dealing with larger clients or B2B customers. It signals that your business is established, even if you’re below the threshold, and some businesses prefer to work with VAT-registered suppliers.
- Avoid Penalties Later On
By registering early, you remove the risk of missing the threshold and registering late, which could result in penalties. If you’re close to £90,000 turnover—or growing fast—it might make sense to get ahead of the curve and avoid last-minute stress.
- You Can Register as an ‘Intending Trader’
Even if you haven’t made any sales yet, HMRC allows registration as an ‘intending trader’. This means you can still reclaim VAT on your pre-trading costs and start off in a VAT-compliant position, even while planning your launch.
The Downsides of Voluntary VAT Registration
It’s not all upside—there are a few things to consider before registering voluntarily.
- You’ll Need to Charge VAT
If your customers are VAT-registered businesses, this probably won’t be a problem—they can reclaim the VAT you charge.
But if you’re selling to consumers or small non-VAT-registered businesses, adding VAT could make your prices less competitive. You might even be tempted to absorb the VAT yourself, reducing your margins.
It all depends on your customer base and pricing strategy.
- More Admin (and Making Tax Digital)
Once registered, you’ll need to:
- Submit VAT returns (usually quarterly)
- Follow Making Tax Digital (MTD) rules—including using MTD-compliant software
- Keep accurate records and invoices
If you’re not already using accounting software, this will involve a bit of a learning curve—and possibly additional costs.
So, Should You Register?
It depends on:
- Who your customers are
- How much you spend with VAT-registered suppliers
- Whether you’ll benefit from reclaiming pre-registration VAT
- Your plans for business growth
For many B2B businesses or start-ups with high setup costs, voluntary registration can offer more benefits than drawbacks. For consumer-facing businesses with tight margins, it might make sense to wait.
Thinking About Voluntary VAT Registration?
Whether you want to reclaim pre-launch VAT or build a more credible image for your business, voluntary VAT registration could be a smart move—but only if it fits your wider strategy.
