Tax Relief on Charitable Donations

Donating to charity is not only a wonderful way to give back, but it can also provide you with valuable tax relief. Here’s how you can maximise your tax benefits when making charitable contributions.

Gift Aid

If you’re a UK taxpayer, you can claim Gift Aid on your charitable donations. This scheme allows the charity to reclaim basic rate tax on your donation, meaning every £1 you donate is worth £1.25 to the charity.

To donate through Gift Aid, you need to make a Gift Aid declaration. This option is typically available on charitable giving pages or through a form provided by the charity.

It’s important to ensure that you’ve paid enough tax to cover the amount the charity will reclaim. If not, or if you’re not a taxpayer and still make a Gift Aid declaration, HMRC may recover the claimed tax from you. Review any ongoing Gift Aid declarations if your income falls to avoid any surprises.

For higher or additional rate taxpayers, you can claim additional relief equal to the difference between your marginal tax rate and the basic rate on your donation. This can be done through your tax return.

Payroll Giving

If you’re an employee and your employer offers a payroll giving scheme, you can make charitable donations directly through your payroll. Your donations are deducted from your gross pay before tax, providing immediate relief at your marginal rate. This means you won’t need to claim higher or additional rate relief through your tax return. The donations are passed to the payroll agency used by your employer, who then forwards them to your chosen charity.

Making a Gift in Your Will

Donations to charity are exempt from inheritance tax (IHT). Additionally, if you leave at least 10% of your estate to charity, the IHT rate on your estate is reduced from 40% to 36%.
