If your business turnover has passed the £90,000 VAT registration threshold, it’s time to take action. But did you know that the date you choose for your VAT registration can make a big difference to your cash flow and the VAT you can reclaim?
Let’s look at how it works — and what to watch out for when picking your effective date.
When Do You Need to Register for VAT?
You must register for VAT if either:
- At the end of any month, your total taxable turnover for the past 12 months exceeds £90,000; or
- You expect your turnover in the next 30 days alone to go over the threshold.
If your turnover is below the threshold, you can still register voluntarily. This can be useful if:
- You make zero-rated sales but pay VAT on purchases; or
- You want to recover VAT on goods and services your business buys.
Voluntary registration can help improve cash flow — but timing is everything.
Choosing the Right Start Date
When registering voluntarily, you can choose your effective VAT registration date.
Once your registration is active:
- You must charge VAT on taxable sales from that date onward.
- You can reclaim VAT on your purchases made from that date.
However, you can’t recover VAT on anything bought before your chosen date. So, if you’re planning a big purchase — say new equipment or a vehicle — it’s best to ensure your VAT registration is effective before you buy.
Backdating Your Registration
HMRC allows you to backdate a voluntary VAT registration by up to four years.
This can be handy if you’ve been trading for a while and want to reclaim VAT on previous expenses. But remember — once backdated, you’ll also need to account for VAT on all sales you made from that backdated date onwards.
It’s a balancing act, so always check whether backdating works in your favour.
Can You Change the Registration Date Later?
Once your VAT registration is in place, changing the effective date isn’t easy.
HMRC doesn’t usually allow amendments unless there’s a genuine mistake, and there’s no automatic right to appeal if your request is refused. That’s why it’s crucial to get the timing right the first time — particularly if it affects what VAT you can reclaim or what you’ll need to pay.
Final Thoughts
VAT registration can be more complex than it looks — especially when choosing the effective date. The wrong timing could cost you valuable input VAT or create an unexpected VAT bill.
