I had a long journey down to Cardiff on Monday. Between football, family, and rugby, this is a journey I do quite a few times each year. What was different this time is that, rather than drive down, I got the train.
The reason I got the train was because I had lots of stuff I wanted to get done. When I’m in the office each day, sometimes there are just too many distractions. Whether it’s the team coming to ask me questions, emails, or the phone going, there’s always something happening.
Do you find that, sometimes, you get to the end of a day and you haven’t quite got done what you wanted to do yourself, which often is the really important stuff to drive your business forward? I do, so I decided to get the train and have 3 1/2 hours each way, with the phone switched off, where I could focus on driving the business forward. And you know what? I got loads done.
One of the big things I did was look at my plan for where I want the business to be by the end of 2018, and then put in place the steps that will really get me there. This is exactly the kind of thing that is good to do away from the office. No distractions, just focus.
So, my tip this week is what can you do to get away from the office, get some time to yourself, and focus on making sure your business has the best year ever in 2018?
[By the way, the journey was better than the destination! I went down to watch Wales play football against Ireland. I’m a big Wales fan, and I spent last summer in France at the Euros. Unfortunately, after Monday night, next summer will be spent watching the World Cup from my armchair instead of with a vodka in Russia!]
