We recently sponsored a prize at the Liverpool Hope University Insight to Business Awards. Amongst the likes of Santander, Vodafone, Everton FC and Aldi, a two-week placement at JDA was obviously the star prize!
So, what did the lucky winner, Joe Dunwell, think about his two weeks at JDA?
As a university student wanting to take up Accountancy as a career, the opportunity of a two-week placement at Jon Davies Accountants sounded extremely beneficial in gaining the knowledge and understanding of accountancy which would complement and build on my previous work experience at RSM but also put me in good stead for my accountancy placement year at Sedulo Leeds. Working within a smaller firm enables focused first-hand experience across a variety of different accounting activities which is something that firms such as the big four cannot compete with.
My two weeks spent at Jon Davies Accountants consisted of the following:
· Understanding and gaining Certified status in the use of Xero accountancy software
· Creating a CSV and Filing Confirmation Statements
· Importing Trial Balances into TaxCalc
· Preparing of accounts and analytical review
· Attending BNI networking meeting & Santander Bank Manager meeting
· Gaining knowledge of Receipt Bank App, scanning receipts in and reconciling them in Xero
· Writing several blogs which are relevant information for clients, advertised on the Jon Davies Website
· Attending the teams monthly night out and winning the pub quiz!!
One highlight that stood out for me over the two week placement was the opportunity to attend BNI, a networking group that enables businesses to tap into the contacts of other individuals who attend the group thereby building a list of contacts for potential clients. Having known a little about BNI in the past, going to an actual meeting gave me a clearer understanding of what it takes to connect with others and make a business grow.
Jon Davies Accountants have helped me to further develop skills such as verbal communication, Microsoft Excel, Xero, teamwork and time management. Working for a team of 5 or 6 employees presents the opportunity to get to know people on a personal level which in turn creates a great office environment, as I have felt extremely welcomed and a part of the team for the short time that I have been here. Speaking to the various members of staff about their route into accountancy has accelerated my thinking as to the route I want to consider in the future.
My time at Jon Davies Accountants is one that I will not forget quickly, it has been a privilege and pleasure working for such a great team, and I wish them all the success in the future. Thank you to Liverpool Hope University and Jon Davies Accountants for the unforgettable opportunity.
