If you pay for work-related expenses out of your own pocket and your employer doesn’t reimburse you, you may be able to claim tax relief—but only if the expenses meet HMRC’s strict rules.
To qualify, your expenses must be:
- Wholly, exclusively, and necessarily incurred in the course of your job.
- Covered under specific rules, such as travel costs or professional fees.
HMRC has introduced new evidence requirements for these claims—so if you’re planning to claim, make sure you follow the latest rules.
Can You Claim Online?
The good news? HMRC has reopened its online expenses claim service after a temporary closure. Employees can now submit claims using the new iForm on the Gov.uk website.
However, there are some limits:
- If your claim is £2,500 or less per tax year, you can submit it online.
- If you’re claiming more than £2,500, you must include it in your Self Assessment tax return.
- If you already file a Self Assessment return, your claim should be made through your tax return, even if it’s under £2,500.

What Evidence Do You Need?
HMRC now requires supporting evidence with all expense claims. The type of evidence depends on the expense you’re claiming for.
🔹 Professional Fees & Subscriptions: A receipt or proof of payment from the organisation.
🔹 Mileage Allowance: A mileage log showing:
- Each journey
- Start & end postcodes
- Reason for travel
🔹 Homeworking Costs: A copy of your employment contract or other proof that you are required to work from home (not just doing so by choice).
🔹 Other Expenses (e.g., equipment or tools): A receipt, bank statement, or credit card statement proving what was bought and who paid for it.
No Evidence Needed for Flat-Rate Expenses
If you’re claiming a flat-rate expense for uniforms, work clothing, or tools, no evidence is required.
